- Dutchmen defender battling back from brutal injury
A scary story from earlier in the season now appears it will have a happy ending.
On Sat., Sept. 22, in Brantford, Kitchener Dutchmen defenceman Devin Berg suffered a broken femur after being checked from behind into the boards by Golden Eagles forward Jack Mullan. Complications from surgery in a Brantford hospital resulted in Berg being placed on a respirator and in intensive care, and he ended up staying in hospital for 15 days.

- Dutchies show no hospitality

Oktoberfest is for visitors to Kitchener. Right?
Therefore, shouldn't the Stratford Cullitons have partied at the expense of the Kitchener Dutchmen yesterday evening at the Kinsmen Arena?
Any suggestion of the Kitchener crew being good hosts, however, turned out to be a pile of beer and pretzel logic.
With midget aged Dutchmen forward Todd Martin having a breakout game, the Dutchmen outscored the Cullitons 5-1.
Martin, who played last season for the Waterloo Wolves minor midgets, had two goals and an assist as the Dutchmen, now 4-6-0-0, moved into a sixth place tie with the Waterloo Siskins in the Mid-Western Junior Hockey League.
"I finally got off the cold streak and started scoring," said the 6-1, 190 lb forward. "I could have had about six (goals), couldn't I?"
Certainly, Martin missed a late chance for a hat-trick on a power play setup from Jordan Hardy.
But he beat Cullitons goalkeeper Jordan Ruby with a strong wrist shot from the faceoff circle to put the Dutchmen up 4-1 at 8:51 of the third period.
His first goal came in the second period on a rebound off the end boards. Cullitons goaltender Jordan Ruby was caught out of position on the play, leaving Martin with an open net.
Hardy also had a shot at an open net in the second period soon after Martin's goal, but Ruby recovered to make the save.
Stratford's Darren Martin tested Kitchener goaltender Matthew Smith on a short-handed breakaway a few minutes later. He didn't score, but he forced Jan Safar into a hooking penalty.
In the first period, Brendan Haber beat Smith to put the Cullitons up 1-0 when he took a pass from Tom Jobson in the corner.
Shawn Bechtloff tied the game at 1-1 when his low screen shot beat Ruby for a power-play goal.
The teams left for the dressing room at 15:56 of the second period due to a delay in which a pane of glass had to be replaced along the end boards.
There was a similar delay two weeks earlier.

Player Testimonials
Kevin Galerno
University of Alabama Hunstville NCAA Hockey
I spent 3 years of my junior career with the Kitchener Dutchmen and the friendships and memories that I made in my time there were amazing
and will stay with me for a lifetime.
Their commitment to helping players succeed in all aspects has been instrumental in assisting them to reach the next level, as players
and good citizens. My years spent with the Dutchmen provided me the opportunity to fully develop as both a person and a player and has
allowed me to reach my personal goal as a NCAA Div I student athlete.
As I enter my Junior year with the University of Alabama in Huntsville, I know that without the help and support of the Kitchener Dutchmen
Organization I would not be where I am today.
I still look back on my time with the Dutchmen as some of the most enjoyable experiences
that I've ever had playing the game.
